Place the following transparency on the overhead and discuss the need to develop ideas and concepts before introducing fraction symbolism and terminology. Note that the NCTM Standards say that mathematics should be a "sensemaking" experience.
































Show the following transparency of the eight major fraction topics. Remind the teachers that one of the purposes of this workshop is to show ways to introduce fraction concepts before the introduction of symbols and rules. There will be activities and games for each of these topics that precede the use of fraction symbols and rules.
